National History Day
My kid just went throught the ordeal of National History Day. This year's theme: "Taking a Stand". Well, guess who "took a stand". ....every grievance-ridden group who thinks they got a raw deal by living in America.
Indians...women's rights ....slavery...labor leaders....pacifists.....you know the drill.
And who are these people whom we are to emulate, for their principled stands, according to the list of suggestions my son received? Why, Emma Goldman, who advocated (and attempted) political assassination . Whoa! Now THERE's a civics lesson we want our kids to glom onto! And Malcom X, who represented a crackpot group that STILL insists that whites are inferior! And the Hollywood Ten, a bunch of Stalinists who invoked a bogus right not to testify before a House Committee. (Just ask yourself how many Americans have successfully flipped off Congressional and Senatorial committees in such a fashion. Answer: Zilch.)
There were 20 more examples of "taking a stand", virtually all with the same Marxist theme of "oppression". Funny, the Abolitionists were not among the people who took a stand ---that would tend to exculpate whites who opposed slavery. Nor was the Berlin Airlift, or the war against Naziism. Or the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Or how about the millions of immigrants who foolishly left everything to come here for a new life? Funny, isn't it, how they didn't write home to say how horrible America really was....
Lets be clear: the attempt here is to inculcate our children with the idea that America is and was a horrible place--- despite the tens of millions of immigrants who came here thinking it was the lasnd of Opportunity and Freedom.
Parents ought to watch out for this kind of Marxist crap, and challenge it in every available forum.
